OmniServer Licensing Details

We believe in making the details of how a product licensed as transparent as possible to help you understand what you receive for your investment in a product and relationship with Software Toolbox.

The OmniServer is a data acquisition software application used to collect and expose process data from non-standard devices to HMI, SCADA, MES or Historian type client applications. The product is most commonly used by users and system integrators needing to exchange data with non-standard process devices such as scanners, weigh scales, weigh bridges, printers, cameras & video control systems, door control systems, chromatographs and 1000's of other devices that don't have off-the-shelf OPC compatible drivers.

OmniServer is licensed on a per-machine basis meaning that each machine where you will need to install OmniServer requires its own license (software or hardware). Licensing does not restrict number of connected clients or devices. We offer a variety of license types that can be purchased for any of the product editions shown on the ordering page (with or without a hardware key dongle option).

All OmniServer licenses are perpetual licenses, meaning the license will continue to operate regardless of the current state of the support/maintenance agreement. The only limitation for out-of-support licenses is the version the license is compatible with (i.e. an out-of-support license will only be compatible with the OmniServer version/versions that were available while the support/maintenance agreement was current).

OmniServer Server Edition

This is the most commonly purchased Edition and can be ordered from our ordering page. Licensed on a single machine for any number of connected clients, the OmniServer Server Edition provides the same protocol configuration and parsing abilities as all other Editions.

Data can be read/written by any HMI / SCADA / MES / Historian or other client type application via one of the supported software interfaces (OPC UA, OPC DA, SuiteLink, FastDDE or DDE).

OmniServer Professional Edition

Licensed on a single machine for any number of client connections, the OmniServer Professional Edition provides the same protocol configuration and parsing abilities as all other Editions.

Data can be read/written by any HMI / SCADA / MES / Historian or other client type application via one of the supported software interfaces (OPC UA, OPC DA, SuiteLink, FastDDE or DDE).

Additionally, data can be logged to text files or databases, sent in email notifications or passed as keystrokes using any of the included Wedge plug-ins.

OmniServer Wedge Edition

Licensed on a single machine for any number of clients, the OmniServer Wedge Edition provides the same protocol configuration and parsing abilities as all other Editions.

Data can be passed as keystrokes to any Windows application on the same machine as OmniServer supporting keystrokes. Typical applications are quality control systems or software where operators would normally manually enter data and now you are capturing it with OmniServer, and the software doesn't offer OPC client capabilities.

OmniServer Server Starter Pack

Includes a single machine license for the OmniServer Server Edition.  In addition to the software license, the Starter Pack includes 2 hours of consulting time that can be used as the user sees fit (i.e. webex training, protocol development, etc).

OmniServer Professional Starter Pack

Includes a single machine license for the OmniServer Professional Edition.  In addition to the software license, the Starter Pack includes 2 hours of consulting time that can be used as the user sees fit (i.e. webex training, protocol development, etc).

OmniServer Hardware Key Dongle Support

With OmniServer V3.2.0.3 or newer, OmniServer supports an optional hardware key dongle as an alternative to a traditional software license.  Hardware Key Dongles are compatible with any OmniServer Edition license (including Starter Packs) for new or existing software licenses.

Hardware key dongles purchased with a new OmniServer license will be delivered pre-loaded with your license for plug-and-play operation.

Hardware key dongles purchased for use in converting an existing OmniServer software license will be delivered ready for an easy transfer process that is built in to the OmniServer Registration Wizard - click for a step-by-step guide on the transfer process.

Can I transfer my software license?

Our technical support team can assist you in moving your software license to a new machine when/if necessary, provided you are on an active support and maintenance agreement.

Simply submit a re-registration request providing the serial/license number and the circumstances of your license transfer to our support team and you will hear back from them as soon as possible during our business hours.

If you have planned downtime outside of our normal business hours where you will need to transfer your OmniServer license, please contact our support team in advance to arrange for your license to be reset in advance.

Hardware key dongle users can simply unmount their OmniServer hardware key dongle from the current machine and move it to any other machine with OmniServer V3.2.0.3 or newer installed for plug-and-play transfers.  If you're interested in converting your OmniServer software license to a hardware key dongle, dongles are available for purchase on the OmniServer ordering page.

How is my OmniServer license actually delivered?

If you ordered OmniServer without the optional hardware key dongle, you will receive a serial/license number with your purchase (either via online/email delivery or physical delivery or both).  Serial/license numbers use the following formats:

  • Server Edition licenses start with 109
  • Professional Edition licenses start with 110
  • Wedge Edition licenses start with 111

On the machine where you wish to use OmniServer, you'll activate the serial/license - the procedure for registering your OmniServer online is available in our knowledgebase.

OmniServer licenses ordered with a hardware key dongle will be delivered pre-loaded with your license for plug-and-play operation.

Hardware key dongles for use in converting an existing OmniServer software license will be delivered ready for an easy transfer process that is built in to the OmniServer Registration Wizard - click for a step-by-step guide on the transfer process.

Do I have to pay annual fees to keep using my license?

OmniServer licenses are perpetual licenses. That means you own the license forever, as opposed to a subscription license where you have to pay an annual fee to keep using it.

You do need to have an active Support & Maintenance Agreement in order to have access to phone and email support and product updates.

In order to be eligible for an up-to-date version of OmniServer compatible with the latest technology (i.e. keeping current with Windows OS updates and OPC specification updates), you will need to keep your Support & Maintenance Agreement active.  Request a quote here

Do you offer hardware key/dongle licenses?

Yes, starting with OmniServer V3.2.0.3 or newer, we offer an optional hardware key dongle as an alternative license delivery method for OmniServer.

One hardware key dongle is needed per machine/license and dongles are compatible with any OmniServer Edition or Starter Pack for new license purchase or for use in converting existing OmniServer software licenses for use with V3.2.0.3 or newer.

Hardware key dongles are available for purchase on the OmniServer Ordering page.

Converting OmniServer Software Licenses to Hardware

Yes, users with an existing OmniServer software license (any edition) that are using V3.2.0.3 or newer can purchase a hardware key dongle and easily convert the existing software license.

A simple transfer process is built in to the OmniServer Registration Wizard once you receive your hardware key dongle.

Are OmniServer Hardware Key Dongles Compatible with other Software Toolbox solutions?

Currently, Software Toolbox hardware key dongles are compatible with OmniServer V3.2.0.3 or newer for all editions and also compatible with our SLIK-DA toolkit for rapid development of custom OPC server applications.

Additionally, other Software Toolbox solutions are under consideration for future hardware key support.  If you're using OmniServer or SLIK-DA with other Software Toolbox solutions and you're interested in hardware key support, please contact us to discuss your needs.

Is it possible to upgrade my license to a higher Edition of OmniServer?

Yes - it is possible to take an existing OmniServer license that is a lower tier Edition (i.e. Wedge Edition or Server Edition) and upgrade that license to a higher tier.  Pricing is dependent on the current Edition and the current support/maintenance status - contact us for an upgrade quote.

When you purchase an Edition upgrade, you will receive a new serial number that works with your existing install to enable the additional functionality you have purchased.

No additional installation or reconfiguration necessary! Just register your existing OmniServer installation with the new upgrade serial number by visiting our registration website to unlock your new features, configure them, and put them into production!
