Centralizing Data from Multiple Sources into One OPC Server

What is data aggregation?

Data aggregation is the bringing together of data from different OPC servers (and other data sources) into a single data source, so that one or more OPC clients (or other clients) can access this data through a single common interface.

Depending on what solution you choose, data aggregation is about more than just OPC - it's about centralized collection of data from all of your various data source to create a comprehensive data set for your entire enterprise.

Why would I use aggregation?

Most projects today involve systems that are more complex than just an HMI reading and writing with a single PLC. As such, most projects involve configuring separate client connections to multiple sources of data and devices. Data aggregation enables pulling your data together from multiple sources and making it available to client applications as a single, comprehensive data set.

Additionally, not every OPC server supports configurable scan modes like TOP Server does. Data aggregation can help insure a common and consistent update rate is passed to your other OPC servers and data sources avoiding unnecessary traffic on your process network.

What are some key benefits of data aggregation?

  • Reduce load on clients by making all of your data available through a single connection.
  • Accessing data through a single client connection can also save you money if your client application requires a license for each server connection.
  • Collect data from all of your various data sources and present it to the user as a shared common data set.
  • Client programs never need to know which program originated the data in order to read and write to it since there is a common place to access it.

Data aggregation for TOP Server, Other OPC servers and More with Cogent DataHub

The Cogent DataHub helps you gather data from multiple sources and present it to client programs as a single, unified data set. A single connection to the DataHub gives you access to data from all connected OPC DA, OPC UA, DDE and TCP sources.

You can even aggregate data from ODBC databases and data from MQTT data sources.

Built-in data aggregation using TOP Server

TOP Server has multiple options for aggregating data from a variety of data sources beyond just connecting to and polling data from PLCs, RTUs and other process devices.

TOP Server has drivers capable of aggregating data from the following other data sources:

Important Notes:

  • The terms OPC aggregation and data aggregation are interchangeable - we use the term data aggregation because our aggregations solutions support more than just aggregating data from OPC data sources.

Get Started Now

The demo is the full product once licensed. Once a client application connects to the  TOP Server, the TOP Server runtime will operate for 2 hours at a time. At the end of the 2 hour demo period, the demo timer must be reset by restarting the TOP Server runtime service.
