Connect to Remote Rockwell AB Controllers Using ControlLogix as a Gateway

The concept behind routing is to provide a means of communicating with a remote device over various networks. Just think of routing as a bridge between your local device and a remote device even if they are on two different field bus networks. Rockwell supports using their ControlLogix PLC as a router or gateway to other Rockwell networks.

Access to a remote (target) backplane allows for direct communication with the following modules located on that remote backplane:

  • ControlLogix 5500 CPUs
  • SoftLogix 5800 CPUs
  • Interface Modules for DH+ Gateway Applications
    • 1756-DHRIO
  • Interface Modules for ControlNet Gateway Applications
    • 1756-CNB
    • 1756-CNBR

Communications Networks Supported:

  • Ethernet (Ethernet/IP)
  • Data Highway Plus
  • ControlNet

EtherNet/IP Gateway Support

EtherNet/IP Gateway provides a means of communicating with MicroLogix, SLC 500, and PLC-5 series PLC on EtherNet/IP using the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix Ethernet Driver.

Requirements:

  • 2 or more EtherNet/IP Interface modules (such as 1756-ENBT).

  • MicroLogix, SLC500, or PLC-5 series PLC with EtherNet/IP connectivity.

Serial Gateway Support

Serial Gateway capability provides a means of communicating with ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FlexLogix, and SoftLogix PLCs on a serial network with the Allen-Bradley ControlLogix Ethernet Driver.

Requirements:

  • EtherNet/IP Interface module.

  • Local CPU with a serial port.

  • Remote ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FlexLogix, or SoftLogix CPU with a serial port.

Routing Path Examples

Due to the complex nature and sheer number of possible combinations of routing paths of this feature, examples provide the best tutorial.

The following examples include the entire the routing path portion of the Device ID minus the IP of the local ControlLogix ethernet module (located in Slot 3 of the ControlLogix in Position A of the diagram to the right).

So for reference, each of the routing paths below would be preceded by 192.192.181.116 followed by a comma when entered in the ControlLogix Ethernet driver Device ID field.

  1. PLC-5 (D) via DH+ Gateway
    • Model - DH+ Gateway: PLC-5

  2. PLC-5C (B) via ControlNet Gateway
    • Model - ControlNet Gateway: PLC-5C
    • Path - 1,2.A.1
  3. Logix 5500 (C) via Routing over DH+

  4. PLC-5/80C (E) via ControlNet Gateway / Routing over DH+

Important Notes:

  • The TOP Server ControlLogix Ethernet Driver specifies all Node IDs in Decimal format.  Rockwell software (RSLogix, etc.) specifies all Node IDs in Octal format, so please be aware that this conversion may be necessary when defining Device IDs in TOP Server.
  • It's also technically possible to use Logix routing syntax to perform ethernet-to-ethernet routing to a remote Logix controller on a different network from the PC where TOP Server is installed - for details on formatting the Device ID for ethernet-to-ethernet routing, click here.
